The air is cool, the semester passing by quickly, and while the boats should be put away by now, I promised Jesse Iâd teach him to pilot one and, since the lake at our cottage isnât frozen yet, I plan to do just that. Honestly, Iâm kind of glad Kendra and Dane didnât want to come on the boat with us. Jesse and I have very little alone time.
Sure, when we were at his childhood home ages ago, we did have time to ourselves, but when it comes right down to it, we technically went to Bass River with our friends, just like weâre here at my family cottage with them right now. I get the sense that Jesse wants to spend quiet time with me; we just never go anywhere without Kendra and Dane, and Iâd like to change that.
As Jesse takes the wheel and steers the boat to the middle of the lake after I gave him a quick lesson, I stand close and watch, ready to jump in and help if he needs it, but heâs a quick study on so many levels and heâs quite capable of handling this boat without any interference. He turns my way and his grin is so big, it wraps around my heart and squeezes. I know itâs only been a few months since weâve been hanging out, but thereâs no denying it. I want this man. Heck, Christmas will be here before we know it, and even though Iâm not close to my parents, Iâd love to introduce Jesse to them.
Jesse will be going home for the holidays, and I love that heâs so close to his family. Maybe heâll want me to go with him. My stomach flutters at the idea of sitting around a big tree opening gifts and laughing over hot chocolate. Yes, Iâve clearly watched too many Hallmark movies. Is that a standard that can be reached? Iâm not sure. All I know is I want that with the man whoâs grinning like a kid on Christmas morning.
âHaving fun?â I ask.
âYou know it.â He winks at me. âWhen I grow up, I want a boat like this.â
I shrug. âWe can use this one anytime we want.â
His smile falls so fast, a burst of worry flushes my blood. What did I say? Is he not thinking about a future like I am? Maybe Iâm overthinking and he just wants a boat of his own.
I step up to him and put my hand on his back. Thereâs warmth in his gaze as he turns to me, and it ebbs the unease inside me.
He gestures with a nod. âWant to go over there, to the secluded cove?â
I grin, guessing what he has in mind. âSure.â
He turns the boat and once weâre in the cove he asks, âWant to drop anchor?â
I nod. âWant me to teach you?â
âYup.â
For the next few minutes, I show him how to drop anchor and explain the difference between fluke and plow anchors and show him how we determine the depths.
